{"id":1491,"date":"2015-02-12T00:12:00","date_gmt":"2015-02-12T00:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/acloserlookmedia.com\/?p=1491"},"modified":"2024-04-13T00:13:15","modified_gmt":"2024-04-13T00:13:15","slug":"stand-up-for-royalty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/acloserlookmedia.com\/?p=1491","title":{"rendered":"Stand up for royalty"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Grammy-worthy jazz<\/strong>: Attending a show at the Mondavi Center\u2019s intimate Vanderhoef Studio Theatre Cabaret is akin to stepping into&nbsp;<strong>a different time zone<\/strong>\u2014and zip code\u2014from years gone by. As luck would have it,&nbsp;<strong>Billy Childs<\/strong>&nbsp;and his quartet held court there for a four-night residency last week\u2014just days before the jazz pianist and composer snagged his fourth Grammy Award for arranging \u201cNew York Tendaberry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On this particular Thursday night, the group dealt a heaping dose of Childs\u2019 own recorded jazz numbers mixed with various bits of improv and personal taste. Steve Wilson (alto, soprano sax), Hans Glawischnig (stand-up bass) and Johnathan Blake (drums and percussion) are all immensely talented musicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the opening number, \u201cBackwards Bop,\u201d through to the group\u2019s splendid rendition of Horace Silver\u2019s \u201cPeace,\u201d no musical stone was left unturned. Each member, as in any good jazz quartet, was able to strut his stuff and display chops\u2014taking turns while never seeming self-indulgent. If anything, we wished some of Childs\u2019 solo anecdotes never ended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The capacity crowd\u2014ranging from 20-somethings to those leaning toward their 60s\u2014couldn\u2019t have been any more attentive and patient. Nary a cell phone was seen snapping photos, tweeting or recording during the near-90 minute performance. Each tune\u2014including two different numbers about Childs\u2019 sons\u2014was met with huge rounds of applause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pay close attention when Mondavi does these intimate cabaret shows\u2014you\u2019ll rarely see many of the artists come through again for years. Plus, the sound is flawless, there isn\u2019t a bad seat in the house and there\u2019s a fully-stocked bar.
