{"id":1812,"date":"2016-05-05T01:02:00","date_gmt":"2016-05-05T01:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/acloserlookmedia.com\/?p=1812"},"modified":"2024-04-15T01:03:26","modified_gmt":"2024-04-15T01:03:26","slug":"a-jazzy-draw","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/acloserlookmedia.com\/?p=1812","title":{"rendered":"A jazzy draw"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Courtyard sounds<\/strong>: If you haven\u2019t felt ready to commit the funds to a concert at Mondavi Center\u2019s Jackson Hall, note that there are other ways to enjoy the performing arts center\u2019s programming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of those is the&nbsp;<strong>Mondavi Center\u2019s<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>Corin Courtyard<\/strong>. The early, 6:30 p.m. concerts are not only&nbsp;<strong>free<\/strong>, but they are located in a prime outdoor event space, replete with a wine and beer bar, food truck, ample shade and a marvelous sound system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sacramento\u2019s own jazz songstress&nbsp;<strong>Vivian Lee<\/strong>&nbsp;recently held court on the stage with her able quartet and played a set of her own tunes as well as songs from Ant\u00f4nio Carlos Jobim, Dave Brubeck, Rodgers &amp; Hammerstein and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lee\u2019s quartet delighted fans and newcomers alike with a set that didn\u2019t leave anybody feeling left out.&nbsp;<strong>Major props for the inclusion of older fare<\/strong>&nbsp;like \u201cThe Surrey with the Fringe on Top\u201d and \u201cTake Five.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lee looked aglow this particular evening, often starting songs with her lone finger snaps. Her band of seasoned musicians also added their own special swing and jazz elements. Of worthy mention was&nbsp;<strong>drummer Jeff Minnieweather<\/strong>, who played with such dynamics and finesse, one couldn\u2019t help but stare in awe\u2014or, as others demonstrated, film a video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many might assume playing an outdoor show is risky with this region\u2019s frequent weather changes. Instead, it proved to be the perfect precursor to the later Jackson Hall show with jazz diva C\u00e9cile McLorin Salvant. It drew quite a large crowd. Not only was every table and seat taken, but many others improvised to find a good view,&nbsp;<strong>even taking over a staircase<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s just one more Corin Courtyard show until the 2016-17 season. It\u2019s Sacramento\u2019s indie-pop violinist Joe Kye, who will perform on Wednesday, May 11, leading into an evening with classical cellist Yo-Yo Ma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My only critique of the outdoor series? Book more.
