Harlow\u2019s<\/strong> usually isn\u2019t the place to catch local music live. Sure, local promoters bring in offbeat national acts and locals during weekdays. But Harlow\u2019s, on weekends, relies on such cash cows as Double Funk Crunch, Wonderbread 5, Tainted Love and others to pull in a crowd willing to pay from $10 to $20 to hear covers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So Thursday\u2019s last-minute show with Team Sleep<\/strong>, the new project featuring Deftones<\/strong> frontman Chino Moreno<\/strong>, was an anomaly on the club\u2019s June calendar. Listed as a Soul Clap<\/strong> gig with special guests, the only promotion\u2014sans a few color handbills at record stores\u2014was a small mention on the Harlow\u2019s calendar the night of the show. Unless you were hooked into Team Sleep\u2019s e-mail list or visited www.teamsleep.com<\/a>, you probably missed this rare appearance. But over 300 fans did show up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although Team Sleep stalled for what seemed an eternity\u2014the show didn\u2019t start until after 11\u2014the band did not disappoint. With ex-Pocket for Corduroy<\/strong> guitarist Dan Elkan<\/strong> joined by Todd Wilkinson<\/strong> and Moreno, the guitar firepower emanating from the stage was larger than life, like an indie version of the Allman Brothers Band. On songs such as the opener \u201cBlvd Nights\u201d and crowd favorite \u201cSolid Gold,\u201d Team Sleep played with renewed vigor compared to its last Colonial Theater show\u2014and appeared confident in its material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drummer Zach Hill<\/strong>, with his single-kick calisthenics and tricky stickwork, was the true star of the night, though. Unlike his current band, Hella<\/strong>, whose set lists usually time out around 20 minutes and feature a nonstop barrage of neo-prog rock played at 150 beats per minute, Hill showed his ability to lay down deep, cutting grooves behind his fellow bandmates, plus Rick Verlaine<\/strong> and DJ Crook<\/strong>. On tunes like the off-kilter \u201cKing Diamond\u201d and \u201cKool Aid,\u201d Hill was even afforded the opportunity to take center stage and mix up the beat contingent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the many local celebrities in the audience was Moreno\u2019s Deftones bandmates Chi Cheng<\/strong> and Abe Cunningham<\/strong>, plus members of Will Haven<\/strong>, Tinfed<\/strong>, and various 720 Records bands. Moreno\u2019s followers, who made up more than half the audience, knew all the words to some of Team Sleep\u2019s unreleased material, tracks like \u201cMercedes\u201d and \u201cAcoustic One.\u201d Chalk that up to the wonders of Internet streaming. Team Sleep\u2019s upcoming release is due in the fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A friend described the show in three words\u2014\u201cmajestic,\u201d \u201cengaging\u201d and \u2026 well, the other one eludes me. For the sake of argument, a simple \u201cmagnificent\u201d will suffice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
