Unlike\u00a0<em>The Soft Bulletin<\/em>, the Lips\u2019 previous album,\u00a0<em>Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots<\/em>\u00a0has a more playful vibe, with obvious nods to children\u2019s songs of yore. On \u201cDo You Realize??\u201d and a marvelous pair of title cuts, the Lips play with an amalgam of keyboard and samplers, giving a bouncy, lighthearted feeling. Although the songs don\u2019t reach the dizzying heights found on\u00a0<em>The Soft Bulletin<\/em>, moments like \u201cEgo Tripping at the Gates of Hell\u201d and \u201cIn the Morning of the Magicians\u201d make this album quite special. Comparisons to Mercury Rev, whose Dave Fridmann produced and played on\u00a0<em>Yoshimi<\/em>, and Grandaddy are inevitable, but\u00a0<em>Yoshimi\u00a0<\/em>has much more depth and character than the works of those bands.
